In February 2020, I began creating the Cents of Beauty brand, with a client who is a longtime craftsman in the coin ring market.
I was responsible for essentially every element required to create a small business brand. From graphics, to development, to SEO, I got hands on with every little detail and saw prominent growth.
Within 2 months, we had grown our social media following by 300%, social media interactions by 350%, increased sales by 54%, without our new website, which will be launched in Summer 2020.
Create a typeface.
Non-western characters only.
Must have full language upper & lower cases.
Must have 10 digits and 5 symbols.
My favorite non-western typography comes from Kufa, Iraq. Kufic Script is the oldest handwritten script, and set me up for a creative breakthrough. "Kufic Square" is a style used in many mosques, where the text is often illegible unless deciphered, but reads script of the Koran in an ornamental way. In order to ensure uniqueness, I applied a similar concept to Katakana Japanese and this was my result.
I transformed Katakana Japanese and Kufic Square to become a completely new style for writing Japanese. Below is the word 'Jewel' (translated into gem), that loses legibility unless you have studied the letter forms.
Each character maintains a perfect 1:1 ratio of positive and negative space, and with some creativity they can all be made into perfect squares or ornamental patterns.
Create a cookbook based on a cooking film.
Must have cover, spine, and back cover.
Must have two spreads showcasing two recipes that are directly related to the film.
Burnt with Bradley Cooper is one of my all-time favorite films. Adam Jones is a washed up executive chef of the Langham, that ends up fighting to receive his 3rd Michelin Star. His process if flawless, his kitchen is perfectly kept, his dishes are of the highest luxury. I wanted to create a cookbook that gives the same feel as if you were dining at the Langham. Minimalist style, hints of popping color, and a clean layout.
I decided that to showcase the dishes, illustrations would not suffice. I cooked each dish, with some altered ingredients, and set up a photoshoot to get the closest representation possible from an apartment kitchen. I selected Futura as my typeface for it's durability as both a display and a body type. The sharp qualities of Futura echo chef's knives; this project would not be the same without it.
Create a mural for any setting that relates to food, or cooking in a historical context.
I focused on multiple perspectives, creating a 2-Panel Mural with a perspective shift during the experience. When approached, the mural eases you in the transition from far-vision, into close-up, back into a fading perspective.
John Harvey Kellogg was a bland character, I must assume, his rigidity in personality is suggested by many of his philosophies. I created his image in his very own original bland cereal, which has a sort of poetic quality to it.
